Colour Adjustments (Tinting)

Subtle adjustments to the colour of brickwork and stone have been made for hundreds of years. Whilst early materials and techniques may still play a valuable role in conservation or restoration projects, newer materials first trialled in the late 19th Century offer the durability demanded in most modern day situations. Based on these materials, the modern day silicate 'tint' offers a high degree of penetration and breatheability, contain no VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) and used correctly leads to a very natural and permanent result. It is worth bearing in mind that when ‘blending-in’ newer brickwork, the bricks are typically treated one by one so as to introduce the required variety of colours and tones. All of our tinting services come with a 25 year guarantee (subject to normal weathering conditions) unless otherwise stated.

BRICK TINTING: EXTENSIONS

Far too often the wrong bricks are selected for extension works. The photos below demonstrate that even in extreme cases, corrections can be made.

TINTING CONCRETE & STONE

It is possible to successfully tint other types of masonry including concrete and some types of stone. Colour inconsistencies in precast stone can usually be fixed in this way (as the photo below demonstrates).

MORTAR TINTING

It is usually possible to create a matching mortar colour with careful selection of sand and binder alone. If this is not possible then tinting, once the mortar has fully cured, may be an option.

BRICK TINTING: PATCHY BRICKWORK

Whilst most structural repairs are sympathetic with the original brickwork, occasionally unnattractive variations will result. Through a process of colour matching masonry dyes and applying them with a keen eye for detail, we can soon get rid of these inconsistencies and blend them into their surroundings.
